Datuk Dr.P. Muthusamy has been instrumental in introducing a new dimension of Ophthalmology education via his ‘Muthusamy Virtual University’. He is a dynamic force behind the success of many aspiring Ophthalmologists in achieving their goals, including myself.
I was among his pioneer group of students preparing for ICO Part 1 and 2 back in 1997. He was instrumental in bringing the ICO exam to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. I passed the exam with his notes and guidance. After I passed my exam, he helped me to transfer from a district hospital to Queen Hospital’s Eye Department in Kota Kinabalu. I am indeed lucky to have had him as my mentor. Datuk Dr.Muthu is also a generous man. When I told him I had decided to sit for ICO Part 3, he had his collection of books immediately sent to me by his driver. He never kept me waiting for long whenever I dropped by his busy clinic. He offers his busy consultation clinic to medical students from all over the world, affirming his dedication to education in Ophthalmology.
His social circle in Kota Kinabalu is legendary. Despite his heavy schedule as a prominent ophthalmologist in Sabah, he still finds time to do charity work with the Lions Club and is an active member of the Kota Kinabalu Toastmaster Club.
I find Datuk Dr.Muthu an optimistic person, ever ready to encourage others to succeed. Many times when I felt let down by some external events, Datuk Dr.Muthu’s e-mails were always uplifting with his words typed in highlighted ‘bold’ letters.
With his influence and reputation, Datuk Dr.Muthu has managed to recruit among the best minds in Ophthalmology to participate in the running of Muthusamy’s Virtual University. His Faculty Members are spread across continents from UK to Hong Kong and I am delighted to share the joys and the worries of this close knit community which he has built.
Datuk Dr.Muthu has influenced me in more ways than one. I find him a generous leader, eager to help others. I hope that one day I can play a part in realizing his dream of building a world class ‘Eye Hospital’ in his name.
